Angel Food program a godsend

NEW HAVEN — With three kids and a husband to feed, Fola Bamgboye spends quite a lot of money on groceries, so when the Angel Food program came to her church, it was an easy sell.

“It’s definitely a good deal; you save money,” Bamgboye said. “And I love the meats.”

Angel Food Ministries was founded in 1994 by Joe and Linda Wingo to provide food for friends and neighbors who were struggling financially. Today, the program helps provide food relief to more than 500,000 families each month in 34 states.

In New Haven, Church on the Rock serves as a hub or delivery site once a month, but folks do not need to be affiliated with the church to order the food that costs much less than in the stores.

The Rev. James Roundtree, associate pastor of Church on the Rock, said the food is high quality from the best brandname vendors. And, with the economy the way it is, the program is especially appealing.

“We have all kinds of people signing up — it’s not just the poor,” Roundtree said. “In these times we live in now, nobody knows.”

The way the program works, orders have to be in and paid for by a certain date. The deadline for this month’s orders is Sunday, and the food will be delivered Nov. 22 to the church at 95 Hamilton St. A feature package with a $60 or so value is offered each month for $30 and includes meats, vegetables and other items. The menu changes each month, and many other packages in individual food categories are offered.

Pre-made meals for seniors or folks on the go are also available at a discount.

This month, there is also a Thanksgiving dinner box for $30 that feeds two adults and two children.

“It’s been good, it’s been very good,” Roundtree said. Continued...

Noreen Reading said she’s ordered from Angel Food the last four months in a row and suddenly sees a difference.

“It’s an extra boost — a supplement to what we have,” Reading said. “It’s so inexpensive for the amount of stuff you get. Now we’re definitely going to use it because I see the benefit.”
