ONE salutes Haydn, premieres Bach tribute piece

NEW HAVEN — Orchestra New England pays its respects to Joseph Haydn on the 200th anniversary of the composer’s death, with its Saturday concert, The Honorable Haydn.

The concert takes place at 8 p.m. in Battell Chapel, corner of Elm and College streets, with the orchestra under the direction of its founder James Sinclair.

In addition to the Haydn programming, Joseph Russo’s "Four Pieces for Strings: Homage to Bach" will have its world premiere. Russo has been ONE’s string bassist and personnel manager since 1976. This will be the ninth piece he has written for the orchestra.

Sinclair describes the piece as "four contrasting movements for string orchestra, an homage to Bach in the style of counterpoint, including some fugal writing.

"Our audiences have been thrilled with his accessible style," Sinclair says of Russo’s work. "Every work has been received with standing ovations. He has particular strength with his melodic lines and pleasantly beefed-up harmonies."

The Haydn works are: Symphony 22 in C ("The Philosopher"), Horn Concerto in C and Symphony 77 in B-flat.

Tickets are $20 and $35, available at the Shubert Theater box office: (203) 562-5666 or 1 (888) 736-2663 or online at www.shubert.com. For more information, call ONE at (203) 777-4690 or visit orchestranewengland.org.
