Yale wins season opener
WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Tom Williams era began with a bang in Yale’s season-opening 31-10 football victory over Georgetown Saturday in front of a near-capacity crowd at Multi-Sport Field.
Coach Williams and the Bulldogs never trailed the Hoyas (0-3), but the game was not put away until a 12-play, fourth–quarter drive, capped by junior running back Jordan Farrell’s second touchdown run of the day.
“It was good to get a win. This was a complete team victory,” said Williams, who got a congratulatory hug from captain Paul Rice and then a water container dumped on his head by a bunch of his players. “Getting a bath is a good thing.” Sophomore quarterback Patrick Witt, who transferred to Yale from Nebraska, completed 22 of 27 passes for 216 yards, including two touchdowns.
However, he lost the handle on two balls that prevented the Elis from putting the home team away much earlier.
Farrell, making his first career start, rushed for 91 yards on 17 carries.
Tom Mante kicked a career-best 50-yard field goal and had punts of 73 and 65 yards.
Jose Pablo Buerba’s 30-yard field goal at 7 minutes, 6 seconds of the second quarter cut the Yale lead to 10-3.
Farrell put Yale ahead 17-3 with a 19-yard touchdown run off tackle.
The teams traded turnovers with under two minutes left in the half, but Witt’s fumble was returned 33 yards for a touchdown by linebacker Paul Sant’Ambrogio to bring the Hoyas within 17-10.
Isaiah Kempf completed 32 of 59 passes for 332 yards and threw two interceptions for Georgetown. Robert Lane caught 13 passes for 149 yards.
