Survey seeks views on quality of city life

NEW HAVEN — Do you feel safe where you live? Would you like to see a convenience store close by? Are there low-cost recreational facilities you can easily access? Do you have skills you can contribute toward improving your neighborhood?

Those questions and more about the quality of life in New Haven will be e-mailed to thousands of New Haveners as 12 community management teams and other grassroots groups work to identify people’s concerns and get them more involved.

Douglas Hausladen, vice chairman of the Downtown-Wooster Square Community Management Team, one of the more active groups, said a lot of energy goes into reacting to a crisis.

Knowing what changes residents would like to see would help with planning the monthly community meetings and introduce the organization to a larger network, he said.

Using a small grant from the Community Foundation for Greater New Haven, Hausladen, Mark Abraham and Ken Gleasman helped put together the survey, which Hausladen said is based on successful models from around the country.

The three first focused on residents and businesses in the downtown and Wooster Square areas, but realized their survey could easily become a citywide tool.

The New Haven Quality of Life survey will be available online for any city resident, visitor, student or employee to answer, while paper copies will be available at some stores and public places.

The survey can be accessed at http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/neighborhoodsurveynewhaven.

The neighborhood-level results will be available at http://www.ctdatahaven.org. Neighborhood workshops on the results will be held in March or April.
