Zampier reaches 1,000 points in Yale’s win over Columbia

Alex Zampier became the 23rd player in Yale history to score 1,000 career points as the men’s basketball team defeated host Columbia 79-64 Saturday in an Ivy League contest.

Zampier’s milestone basket came on a 3-pointer from the wing with 2 minutes left in the first half.

The Bulldogs shot 54.8 percent and outrebounded the Lions 23-10. Yale’s bench outscored Columbia’s 30-15.

Zampier finished with a team-high 18 points. Paul Nelson had 13 points and eight rebounds and Greg Mangano had 12 points and 10 rebounds for the Bulldogs (9-14, 3-3).

Noruwa Agho scored 30 points to pace the Lions (8-12, 2-4).

New Haven 62, Southern Conn. 47: Cassius Chaney scored 18 points, grabbed 12 rebounds and had three steals for the Chargers in their Northeast-10 Conference victory at West Haven.

Robert Jamerson scored 19 points and Kelvin Jackson had 10 points, eight rebounds and three assists for New Haven (3-18, 3-14).

Tobin Carberry scored 26 points and had three assists and three steals for the Owls (2-20, 1-16).

Albertus Magnus 70, Emerson 68: Ray Askew made a layup with 22 seconds left as the Falcons rallied from a 26-point second-half deficit to win the Great Northeast Athletic Conference game at Boston.

Askew’s layup gave the Falcons their only lead and capped a half in which Albertus Magnus shot 59 percent. Askew led the Falcons with 25 points and 15 rebounds and Byron Reaves had 17 points. Continued...

New Haven 73, Southern Conn. 58: Helin Marte scored 15 points and also added nine rebounds and nine assists for the Chargers in their NE-10 victory over the Owls at West Haven.

Dominique Stellmacher had 17 points and Yasmin Ithier-Vincenty and Jasmine Hardy each had 13 for New Haven (11-11, 9-8).

Allyson Smith scored 20 points and Shelley Pierson and Alex Fiola had 10 apiece for the Owls (11-11, 8-9).

Albertus Magnus 83, Emerson 80 (OT): Kendrae Walker scored a game-high 30 points before fouling out at the end of regulation for the Falcons in their GNAC victory at Boston.

Kendra Dowen scored 17 points and Shanilya Bush 11 for Albertus Magnus (9-12, 5-3).

Emerson (11-10, 6-2) controlled the contest for the first 37 1/2 minutes, holding a 10-point halftime lead and a 15-point lead with 7:27 remaining in the game before Albertus rallied.

Yale 81, Columbia 74: Yoyo Greenfield scored 20 points and had four assists for the Bulldogs in their Ivy League victory at New Haven.

Megan Vasquez scored 19 points and had seven assists and Michelle Cashen had 15 points and nine rebounds for Yale (9-11, 4-2).

Quinnipaic 2, Colgate 1: Evelina Husar scored her second goal of the season, and the winner, for the Bobcats in their Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference victory at Hamilton, N.Y.

Quinnipiac (15-8-7, 8-4-6) opened up the scoring on a power play at 3 minutes, 17 seconds of the first period. Heather Hughes scored between the goaltender’s right pad and the goalpost for a 1-0 lead. Felica Vieweg earned her fourth assist of the season on the play. The goal was Hughes’ team-leading 12th of the year.

Harvard 4, Yale 3: Bray Ketchum and Samanta McLean scored third-period goals, but the Bulldogs lost their ECAC contest at Cambridge, Mass.

Alyssa Clarke also scored for Yale (9-13-3, 7-10-1).
