Seven headed to state boxing Hall of Fame

The Connecticut Boxing Hall of Fame will hold a press conference on Monday to announce its sixth induction class.

The newest members are: F. Mac Buckley, Desi Clark, Sean Malone Sr., Bob Steele, Joe Tessitore, Micky Ward and Troy Wortham.

F. Mac Buckley was one of the most influential boxing personalities in the Greater Hartford area during the 1970s and ’80s. He trained world champions Tyrone Booze and Marlon Starling, both hall of fame inductees, and Wortham.

The late Clark, a long-time Hartford trainer, was known as a father figure to most of his fighters. One of his stable of fighters is well-known Connecticut referee Johnny Callas.

Steele, the longtime radio personality in Hartford, spent more than six decades behind the microphone entertaining his listeners.

He was very active in the Connecticut boxing scene, announcing many major boxing events and establishing a career-long relationship with one of the greatest featherweights in the world, Hartford’s Willie Pep, another hall of fame member.

Tessitore has been the longtime blow-by-blow boxing commentator on ESPN’s Friday Night Fights alongside Teddy Atlas.

Tessitore’s duties, in addition to boxing, include announcing college football and horse racing for ESPN.
