Car crashes into Branford home (WITH PHOTOS)
BRANFORD — An allegedly drunk driver barreled into a house at 214 Shore Drive early this morning, rendering it uninhabitable, police said.
Driver Jeffrey Cannon, 21, who was not injured, was charged with driving while intoxicated and traveling unreasonably fast, police Capt. Geoffrey Morgan said.
He was released on $500 bond and is scheduled to appear in Superior Court in New Haven on Aug. 11.
Building Department and Fire Department officials deemed the house, located in the Short Beach neighborhood, uninhabitable after 3:30 a.m. accident, Morgan said.
Police investigators found that the car Cannon was driving was headed west on Shore Drive, moving at a high rate of speed, and he unable to negotiate a turn. His car drove off the road, stuck a concrete wall and went airborne, crashing into the front porch of the house, Morgan said.
"There appeared to be extensive structural damage to the house and the building inspector responded to the scene to examine the house," sid Sgt. Gregory Watrous. "The resident of the house had to be removed by firefighters and the residence was deemed uninhabitable.''
The resident of the house will be staying with relatives, Watrous said.
