Stretching out?
HAMDEN — Chiropractor Robert M. Denes went through college, followed by four years of chiropractic school, then one year of clinical work and he’s been practicing since 1985.
But one goal continued to elude him.
“A holistic facility has always been a dream of mine and now with adding a massage therapy facility and a yoga studio along with my chiropractic practice, I have achieved my dream,” he said.
Denes specializes in physical therapy and sports medicine, but also sees a lot of car accident victims and people living with scoliosis — a curvature of the spine.
Expanding the services he offers sets his practice at 2693 Whitney Ave. apart in difficult economic times and provides two other patient interests under one roof, he said. “We cater toward musculoskeletal problems. The massage-only area is not a spa, we treat therapeutic problems,” Denes said.
Couples may even participate in a massage therapy session together. First sessions are free, as a way of introducing the studio to potential participants.
The yoga classes fill with students from teenagers to people in their 90s.
“We’re more of a novelty, but people still get that personal touch. Old-school doctoring and one-on-one attention,” Denes said. “Yoga’s getting more popular now and it’s a benefit to my patients. It’s a trying time to open up a new thing.”
Hours for Yoga on Whitney are available at www.yogaonwhitney.com and Massage on Whitney is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. seven days a week, but Denes said patients can be accommodated outside of those hours if necessary.
Meanwhile, retail massage services also are changing. Continued...
A more frugal consumer has emerged from the economic downturn and 20-year franchise veteran Todd Leff is planning to open several Hand & Stone massage and facial spa locations in New Haven County by the end of the year.
The concept is that the service will be more affordable for middle-income Americans who can book appointments the same day.
According to Leff, about 75 percent of health savings account plans and HMOs will now reimburse patients for massage therapy if their doctor writes a prescription. Ailments worthy of that prescription include muscle and joint pain, temporomandibular joint disorder (commonly known as TMJ), and stress.
“Most of our franchisees have no massage experience, they are just businesspeople who understand that this industry is ripe for growth and love the fact that we are providing a positive, health-related service,” Leff said.
“Twenty-two percent of Americans got a massage last year, and that figure is growing. As massage becomes a more integrated part of health care, we see this business achieving even wider-spread growth and longevity.”
