Who: Measure hail from Brooklyn with a style of twinkly indie pop that nestles nicely between artists like The Postal Service and Feist. Their songs have shown up on network television too, featured in shows such as NBC’s ‘Mercy’, ABC Family’s ‘Pretty Little Liars’ and MTV’s ‘16 and Pregnant’.

Where you can see them: Friday at Café Nine. Starts at 9 p.m., admission is $5. Measure’s singer/songwriter Laura DiStasi says they are jazzed about playing the Elm City with their pals in Goodnight Blue Moon. “Our bassist Tommy Harron was a member of Pencilgrass – lived in New Haven for a while – and I know is especially looking forward to the show.”

Laura says: “I am the most indecisive person of all time, so while I toyed with different themes for this mix, in the end I couldn't decide and it's kind of a mish mash of things I like and am happy to call attention to.”

“Look Up” by Stars:

I love this song. I was obsessed with this song two summers ago and listened to it on repeat constantly. The orchestration is so full and moving. The line in the chorus, “You’re cold. Maybe you just miss the sun.” seems appropriate for an end of summer mix.

“Good Lies” by The Notwist:



It would be hard for me to make a mix and not include this band. Their beats and melodies are genius. I have not internalized their newest album as much as the others, but this song felt appropriate for this mix.

This album is one of my favorites and this song is infectious. “Help, I'm alive, my heart keeps beating like a hammer.” I listen to this whole album while I'm running and it propels me forward. Inspiring in its artistry and completely fun to listen to.

Michael Flynn and Josh Kaler are great friends of mine and their band is one-hundred percent worth checking out. Measure does our own version of their song “Make You Love Me” which will most likely be on our next album. Excellent songwriting and production.

“Don't Lose Yourself” by Laura Veirs:



She is amazing. Quirky writing and production, really clever lyrics, moving and intelligent; this is a perfect song.

Not yet released, Caroline is one of my best friends, and an artist on Temporary Residence from Tokyo. This song is going to be the single on her upcoming album and third release. It's incredibly beautiful.

“Anyone's Ghost” by The National:



Who doesn't love The National? No one from Brooklyn, that’s for sure. They put on one of the best live shows I've ever seen and their newest album is just as good as those that came before. “Didn't want to be your ghost. Didn't want to be anyone's ghost.” I tend to latch on to one or two lines from a song that really resonates with me, and like all the songs on this list, this song has them.

“After Afterall" by William Fitzsimmons:



I toured with William in Europe this past spring, opening for him and playing in his band, so I have a special attachment to his music. The recording of this song is just the right combination of honest, vulnerable and musical, and I loved playing it live. He is releasing an album sometime soon, which I did some singing on. Definitely worth looking up, if you have not heard him yet.

“Faking the Books” by Lali Puna:



Really awesome electronic band. Saw them live while I was in Germany this past spring touring with William. This is a great older song of theirs. Hearing this was one of the first times I heard chopped up vocals as percussion in such an obvious way. “I’ll be true again, but until then I fake the books.” Good stuff. Continued...

“Movie Loves a Screen” by April Smith and the Great Picture Show:



I just saw this group for the first time last month and fell in love. April has got a HUGE voice and the band is really fun to watch, with their kind of old-time theme. Another group worth checking out if you have not heard them before.
