Valley groups sponsoring art show?
SHELTON — Original artwork depicting the concept of giving will be on display Sunday at the third annual “Art of Giving” juried art show.
The Valley Philanthropy Council and the Valley Arts Council are teaming to sponsor the show and reception from 1 to 5 p.m. at the Greater Valley Chamber of Commerce, 900 Bridgeport Ave., second floor.
“The purpose of the art show is to raise awareness about philanthropy in the Valley by encouraging individuals to think about what giving means to them, and, at the same time, promote the contribution that the arts make in the lives of Valley residents,” Arlene Greco, chairwoman of the Valley Philanthropy Council, said.
Valley Arts Council member Jill Nichols of Shelton, event chairwoman, said about 50 entries have been submitted. The artwork includes paintings, drawings and graphic design, sculpture and photography. She said there will be prizes given for the first place in each category. The awards presentation will be at 3 p.m.
This year, the Valley Arts Council created divisions for schoolchildren, for grades 1-6 and grades 7-12. Artists can sell their artwork and make a 30 percent donation from the proceeds to benefit the Valley Philanthropy Council and the Valley Arts Council.
Valley Community Foundation President James E. Cohen will present a $500 best in show award sponsored by the foundation.
Nichols said there has been more participation this year than previously. “Next year, we would love to get more schools involved,” she said. “The children usually get the theme (of the show) the best.”
Nichols said it has been amazing to see the interpretations of the art of giving.
There will also be several submissions of paintings created by residents of Crosby Commons, a United Methodist Homes facility.
Admission is free, but Nichols requested donations to the Valley Food Bank “to further the theme” of giving. The event will include a disc jockey and refreshments. Continued...
The art will be on display through Dec. 4.
Michael S. Marcinek, managing partner and chief financial officer at Fletcher Thompson Inc., an architectural, engineering and design firm, will be presented with the Distinguished Leader of the Year Award.
The philanthropy council consists of 10 nonprofits: Birmingham Group Health Services; Boy Scouts of America, Housatonic Council; Boys and Girls Club of the Lower Naugatuck Valley; Griffin Hospital; Parent Child Resource Center; Training, Education and Manpower; United Methodist Homes; Valley Community Foundation; Valley United Way, and Valley YMCA.
