Gaylord Hospital in Wallingford receives grant for hot water project

WALLINGFORD — Gaylord Hospital is getting a $323,000 grant from the Connecticut Clean Energy Fund to help pay for a solar thermal hot water heating project.

Construction on the $550,000 project will begin in September, officials at the town-based hospital said. The hospital will pay for the difference between the grant and the project’s total costs.

Once the project is complete, up to 65 percent of the hospital’s annual hot water needs will be provided by solar energy, according to Mark Vere, the hospital’s director of facilities. The remaining 35 percent will be provided by oil-fired boilers that will heat the water, Vere said.

Gaylord is Connecticut’s first hospital to receive state funding for this kind of alternative energy project, said David Bednarz, a spokesman for Gov. Dannel Malloy, who announced the grant during a recent visit to the hospital.

Gaylord’s main campus has a 137-bed rehabilitation hospital on Gaylord Farm Road. The nonprofit health care provider also operates outpatient centers in Guilford, North Haven and Woodbridge.

Gaylord also specializes in dealing with sleep disorders and has centers focused on that medical specialty in Guilford, North Haven, Trumbull and Glastonbury.
