NEW HAVEN  - A crash at George and Day streets Thursday sent a Jeep careening into the front of a corner market.

The driver of the Jeep, who police say didn’t have a license, was hospitalized with injuries that were not believed to be life threatening. Both cars — and the storefront — sustained significant damage.

The wreck pushed in the front of the store, sending bottled soda and toilet paper flying from the shelves. No one was hurt inside the store.

It happened shortly before noon at Cecilia’s Deli Market at 539 George St. The Jeep somehow ended up wedged between a utility pole and the front of the building.

“It’s going to be a hard one,” said York tow truck driver John Digioia. “I’ve had worse. I’ll get it out.”

The Fire Department summoned the city building department to make sure the building didn’t sustain structural damage.

" I never heard of anyone ever driving through a store window, medical building and homes ever..before 1980. Now it's a very normal occurance.
It's not just the old timer's either.
It's young people...are they smoking dope and they are just too relaxed?
Are they even tested for drugs? "

" I have to drive through New Haven twice a day for my job. I can't believe that this doesn't happen several times a day. There are so many people driving around totally unaware that there are other people on the road. They're on their phones or arguing with each other or in a daze. Every single day I see someone who has to be brain dead by the way they're driving. "

" The building owners' insurance carrier will be on the hook for this one. I'm sure the driver had no auto insurance. "

" Driver's name? Was he legal? "

Mike wrote on Jan 13, 2012 8:24 AM:

" exactly Tim Wrightington, whats the drivers name?
Why do I guess only 50-75% of New Haven drivers to actually have a drivers license?

Who pays for these accidents? we all know people with no license never carry insurance. "
